JONATHAN CARELA (1991) is a Dominican interdisciplinary artist & filmmaker, currently based in Bonao, Dominican Republic.

Informed by personal and shared experiences in the quotidian Dominican landscapes of both urban and rural, my paintings and films mimic aspects of these environments, such as the language, improvisatory, the transitory, the informality, the incompleteness, the irreverence, and the humor.

My artistic practice serves as a ground for self-discovery through questioning human behavior and social structures within the Caribbean. I reimagine environments and social interactions anchored in a discursive exploration of contemporary socio-economics, racial and identity issues.

Traversing the inherent discomfort of the unknown, impotence, uncertainty, doubt, and fear, I tear them down in search of emancipation through appropriations and representations of places for collective joy and celebration, or for thought-provocation.

Carela received three Associates degrees in Altos de Chavón, the school of design, D. R.: Graphic design (2013), Fine Arts (2014), and Author cinema (2020). His work has been shown in the Dominican Republic, New York and Miami.
